[ARCHIVED] City of Piqua to conduct smoke testing of sanitary sewer

Smoke Testing 2025

The City of Piqua’s Utility Department, in collaboration with Fishbeck Inc., is conducting smoke testing of sanitary sewers today through October 3.

These tests assist City crews in locating breaks and defects in the sewer system. The accompanying map depicts the testing areas/locations in yellow.

Red door hangers will be distributed to the homes in the testing areas. The door hanger has important information and instructions that residents are requested to read and follow. Pouring water into basement drains and unused sinks helps to prevent the smoke from entering buildings.

Residents who spot smoke coming from vent stacks on buildings or from holes in the ground should not be alarmed. The smoke is odorless, non-toxic and non-staining and poses no fire hazard. The smoke dissipates within a few minutes.

If you have any questions regarding the smoke testing process, the information provided or instructions for residents, call the City of Piqua Utilities Department at (937) 778-2018.
