The Piqua Fire Department has placed new video laryngoscopes into service thanks to a grant from the UVMC Community Benefit Fund.

The grant, not to exceed $10,000, funded the purchase of four video laryngoscope kits with chargers, blades and protective carrying cases. Each medic unit in the department is now equipped with one set.

A laryngoscope is a medical device used to open a patient’s airway and allow paramedics to insert a breathing tube when a person is unable to breathe on their own. The tool is essential in situations such as cardiac arrest, severe trauma or respiratory emergencies. These video laryngoscopes give a much clearer image to the emergency medical service (EMS) provider, allowing for a more successful breathing tube placement.

“We are grateful for the generous support from the UVMC Community Benefit Fund,” Piqua Fire Chief Lee Adams said. “Having these video devices in service directly improves our ability to provide advanced airway management in critical medical and trauma emergencies. By equipping each of our ambulances, we can better serve patients across our community.”

“This investment is in line with the UVMC Community Benefit Fund’s mission to improve health outcomes and quality of life,” said Kevin Harlan, president of Upper Valley Medical Center. “By supporting the Piqua Fire Department with essential medical equipment, we are helping first responders provide the highest level of care when it matters most.”
