City of Piqua staff reflects on the response to Winter Storm Fern, which brought a record-breaking snow accumulation throughout the City at the end of January.

“Our staff came together to clear the streets and keep our community safe,” Assistant City Manager Amy Welker said. “Our Public Works Department — assisted by our Parks, Power and Utilities teams — did an incredible job through 12-hour, round-the-clock shifts to plow snow and treat pavement to make roadways passable and allow our community to get back to its routine following the storm. Their dedication and hard work are recognized and appreciated.”

The City of Piqua’s winter storm response, between Saturday, January 24 and Wednesday, January 28, included:

  • 19 employees from 4 departments
  • 668 hours
  • 12 trucks
  • 348 tons of salt
  • $80,000 in cost across salaries, equipment and materials

Cleanup work continues as crews start at 3 a.m. each day this week to remove snow from the downtown area and ease access to curb ramps. Crews are also conducting maintenance and repair on snow treatment equipment as they stay prepared for winter weather the remainder of the season.

City crews appreciate residents’ patience and remind motorists to allow ample room when traveling near heavy equipment.
